Five eminent speakers with different backgrounds and experience have agreed to be on the panel for a debate on Climate Change, in Bath Abbey on Tuesday, 29th April, with the title: 'CLIMATE CHANGE: What is happening? What can we do? Can Bath become an eco city?'
The evening has been organised by Churches Together in Bath to give people of the city a chance to hear authoritative views on this, the most urgent issue of our lifetime. The speakers will summarise the present state of the climate change debate, and give their views about what organisations and individuals need to do to respond. In particular there will be discussion about how Bath can move towards being an ‘eco city’ following the example of ‘Transition Towns’ Bristol and Totnes, amongst many others.
Speakers will include Professor Anil Markandya of Bath University; Martin Palmer, Director of the Alliance of Religions and Conservation; ecological campaigner Andrew Pendleton, Climate Change Adviser, Christian Aid; and Sarah Pugh, working with ‘Transition Bristol’. The chairman will be Rev Roger Nunn, Executive Secretary of Churches Together in Bath.
The debate will be at 7.30pm, in Bath Abbey; entrance will be free, but there will be a retiring collection to meet expenses.
People from all walks of life and outlooks will be welcome, but particularly members of churches, and it is confidently hoped to fill the Abbey, as for the long-remembered debate on ‘Should we invade Iraq?’ in 2002.

In 2005, the Socialist Party in Ireland (sister party of the Socialist Party in England and Wales)  uncovered a major scandal of migrant worker exploitation. Organised by Carfree UK and the University of the West of England, the conference will focus on Ecotowns, urban regeneration, and healthy cities. Carfree neighbourhoods have been appearing across several European countries in recent years, but ‘carfree housing’ in the UK has all been small in scale, so far. Rosie Winterton, Minister of State for Transport and Markus Heller, a German architect with experience of carfree
communities in Germany, will be speaking and answering such questions as: What are carfree neighbourhoods? How do they work in other countries? What advantages and problems do they bring? Is the UK market ready for such innovations?

A Sustainability Café for climate change related community groups

Create Centre, Bristol

This sustainability café is a follow-up activity to the FoE and Avon Wildlife Trust’s survey of Climate Change related community groups. It will build upon the results and recommendations that emerged from the study to explore ways of supporting and facilitating cooperation between community groups in the Bristol/Avon region.

It will also provide an opportunity to feed into the development of Ecojam.org – a new website dedicated to raising the profile of local green businesses, organisations and community initiatives and connecting them with each other and the people of the Bristol region. Ecojam was born out of the Sustainability Cafes’ organised by the Bristol Sustainability Network and is kindly supported by the University of Bristol and Bristol City Council.

A test version of Ecojam will go live on 6th May.

Bike Week is the UK's annual promotion of cycling with the aim to
get more people on their bikes. The week also encourages people to
consider cycling to work as an alternative to commuting by car and
to reduce the number of unnecessary short car journeys.

Bath & North East Somerset Council's Road Safety and Sports
& Active Leisure teams run a number of cycling events to
encourage people out of their car and to take up a healthier and
greener mode of travel.

Bike Week takes place nationally every June when a variety of
events are held to encourage people to get out on their
bikes.

This year, Bike Week will take place between Saturday 14th and
Sunday 22nd June 2008.
