This month "The Gama strike: A victory for all workers
In 2005, the Socialist Party in Ireland (sister party of the Socialist Party in England and Wales) uncovered a major scandal of migrant worker exploitation. "A modern form of bonded labour" Socialist Party TD (MP) Joe Higgins called it in the Irish Parliament. This documentary captures the historic struggle wages by the Gama workers for justice."

Organised by Carfree UK and the University of the West of England, the conference will focus on Ecotowns, urban regeneration, and healthy cities. Carfree neighbourhoods have been appearing across several European countries in recent years, but ‘carfree housing’ in the UK has all been small in scale, so far. Rosie Winterton, Minister of State for Transport and Markus Heller, a German architect with experience of carfree communities in Germany, will be speaking and answering such questions as: What are carfree neighbourhoods? How do they work in other countries? What advantages and problems do they bring? Is the UK market ready for such innovations?

It will also provide an opportunity to feed into the development of Ecojam.org – a new website dedicated to raising the profile of local green businesses, organisations and community initiatives and connecting them with each other and the people of the Bristol region. Ecojam was born out of the Sustainability Cafes’ organised by the Bristol Sustainability Network and is kindly supported by the University of Bristol and Bristol City Council.
A test version of Ecojam will go live on 6th May.

Along the Bath to Bristol Railway Path 10am-4pm (last start time is 2pm)
Families are invited to take part in a FREE cycling treasure hunt to be in with a chance of winning a new bicycle.
There will be a free drink and snack for everyone who takes part and refreshments will be available to buy along the way.
Turn up on the day and collect your clues card and further details at any of the stalls at the locations along the route. Using the map provided, the challenge is to find the sports related clues along the route and mark them on the score card.
There is a choice of two routes on the Bristol to Bath Railway Path between Staple Hill and Bath. Each route is approximately 4-5 miles long but if you'd like a better chance of winning or fancy a longer ride you can do both routes. It's not a race but remember the last start time is 2pm to make sure you are finished by 4pm.
At the end of the day, two completed cards will be pulled out of the hat for each route. One lucky adult and one lucky child from each challenge will win a new bicycle. A further 10 child runners up will each win a cycle accessories voucher to be spent at a local shop.
Active for Life / Get Active will donate £50 to the school and brownie group with the most entrants.

A Bath Preservation Trust Exhibition at the Building of Bath Museum
The third meeting of BetterBath on 18 June will discuss the Economy of Bath – What changes do we need?
This is your opportunity to discuss:
§ Where is Bath heading if we do nothing?
§ What kind of new jobs do we want?
§ How can the universities help?
§ Can we avoid the risks of unplanned development?
The opening speakers will be Colin Skellett, Executive Chairman of Wessex Water and Chairman of the B&NES Initiative (the strategic body which provides a single business voice in discussions with B&NES Council), will describe the current state of the economy in Bath, and Simon Bond, Director of Innovation Centres at the University of Bath, will talk about what needs to change if the City is to move towards a more balanced and dynamic economy. The meeting will be chaired by Sam Holliday, Editor of the Bath Chronicle. Towards the end of the meeting he will summarise the key points emerging from the debate, and these will be posted on this website We will invite the appropriate bodies (the Council, the B&NES Initiative, the universities etc) to comment on these key points after the meeting, and will publish their responses online.
Further information about the Forum is available on the forum website (http://www.betterbath.org.uk). If you would like to speak at this meeting, please notify us (preferably via the website) with an indication of your interest, so that we can keep a note of the numbers interested and marshal your issues into a logical order. We will invite one of you to lead off on each issue.
The meeting will be in St Michael’s Church, Broad Street, Bath, BA1 5LJ Doors will open at 18.00 when tea and coffee will be available and raffle tickets will be on sale. The meeting will start promptly at 18.30. At the end of the meeting there will be an opportunity to purchase a glass of wine and continue the discussion informally. All takings from the sale of refreshments and the raffle will go to a local charity.

Please keep the suggestions coming (preferably via the website) for future meeting topics, and for any improvements to the meeting arrangements.
Best wishes,
Jane and Henry Brown, 13 May.

Hi All -
I know this is short notice, but the Oxfam Bookshop have agreed to let us have a stall to collect signatures for the G8 petition in the bookshop on Saturday morning! This is a great opportunity to link with the shop and see if this sort of campaign works - it could form the basis of more campaigning throughout the year (and means we can campaign inside rather than outside which is good!).
Thee idea is that we will provide a table & postcards for people to sign to send a Wish to the G8 in Japan. The wishes will then be hung on a Japanese bamboo tree that will go in the window of the shop for the day.
I have the postcards, a tablecloth, the bamboo tree and string. I may be able to get a table, but it's a bit heavy, so if anyone has a light plastic table they can bring that'd be great!
We'll set up around 10 and then man the stall between 10 - 2 (depending on volunteer numbers). If you can help even for half an hour during this time that woudl be great. We only need 1 or 2 people onthe stall at any one time due to the size of the shop, but the more who can do it, the longer we can do it for and the more signatures we'll get!
Once we collect the signatures, we'll be sending a picture of the tree and a message to Beppu, Bath's partner city in Japan about the G8....
Hope to see some of you on Saturday!
Janine

It's easier to achieve than you think. Amazingly, if we all drove just one less journey a week we'd reduce car traffic by 10%. Fancy giving it a go? Swap any car trip between 30 June- 5 July and walk, cycle or take public transport instead, or just don't make the trip at all.

The Briefing event for this years Zero Waste Challenge is being held at Culverhay School, Rush Hill, Bath.
The Zero Waste Challenge is open to any community group however large or small. The briefing event will be full of useful advice and information on how B&NES Waste Services can help you promote the challenge by providing support, ideas and information packs, providing talks, attending meetings, and through the website. There will also be a zero waste buffet and refreshments from 6.45pm. An additional briefing for schools (primary & secondary) will be held at the earlier time of 5pm.
Councillor Charles Gerrish (Conservative, Keynsham North), Cabinet Member for Customer Services, said:
“Bath and North East Somerset Council is delighted to be building upon the success of the two previous Zero Waste Challenge Weeks with our neighbouring local authorities. We are inviting any community group across the district to take part and they are very welcome to attend the briefing event.
One of the Council’s vision priorities, amongst seven others, is to address the causes and effects of climate change. Increasing awareness about recycling and encouraging greater participation ultimately decreases the amount of waste going to landfill. Zero Waste Challenge Week contributes toward meeting this priority. I hope as many people can attend as possible.”
Any school or community groups, large or small are invited to attend. These might include groups such as:
• Parish Councils;
• Scout groups;
• Schools;
• Residents from a block of flats;
• A local street;
• A local pub;
• A virtual community (e.g Facebook groups)
• Local sports teams
• The Women's Institute
• Church groups
• Women and toddlers groups to name but a few.
The briefing event is being held for schools and community groups to explain more about the week, how to publicise it, answer questions and share ideas. Bath & North East Somerset Council is keen to encourage as many people as possible to come along to find out more. The Council has also produced a Community Guidance Pack full of ideas and materials which will be distributed at the event and to any group requesting a copy.
If you would like to take part in the challenge, attend the briefing event or would like to discuss any of this in more detail, please contact Council Connect on: 01225 394041 councilconnect@bathnes.gov.uk

Hi All,
After the success of Saturday's stall, especially around the Knit for Poverty campaign, we're having a bit of a Stitch n Bitch as an opportunity to get together and get creative for the latest Oxfam Campaign!
On Thursday 24th July, from 8pm, join us at Green Park Brasserie to have a summer evening drink outside (or inside if the early part of the summer is anything to go by!) and to knit as many squares as we can for the World's Largest Baby Blanket! We'll have plenty of wool and needles, so don't worry about not having 'equipment' and there will be people who can teach you what to do - so even if you can't knit yet, don't let that stop you!
But why knit a blanket? For every mum, the day her child is born should be the happiest of her life. Yet, in the world's poorest countries, many mums don't survive to look after their babies.
In the next minute, lack of access to health care will claim the life of another mum. In a year, half a million mums die because of poorly equipped hospitals, or because they can't afford to pay health care fees.
World leaders have promised to end this travesty by providing enough aid to deliver the medical services needed, but as things stand they're falling well short.
So, Oxfam are calling on all knitters, and non-knitters who want to give it a go!, to help create a patch for a giant baby blanket – a 'visual petition' we'll hand in to world leaders in September 2008. We're aiming for 250,000 patches - one for every mum who should have survived pregnancy in the last six months.
This will really show world leaders that we are watching & demanding action - so much so we're willing to really put effort into creating the world's biggest baby blanket!
So if you can, do join us. The campaign is running until the end of August, so even if you can't make this event, we will be meeting several more times. We're aiming for Bath to have it's own 'mini-blanket' to add to the petition, so why not try and add a square to the count!!What are the challenges facing Bath's historic environment and why is the city under pressure to adapt?

For those of you unable to make our cinema screening of We Are Together, it's being shown on Channel 4 this Sunday at 7.30pm!
We Are Together is the amazing story of Agape, an African Childrens Choir whose members are all aids orphans. Following their story over the course of a year, the film is a roller coaster of heart warming, heart breaking but overwhelmingly inspirational and is well worth watching.
And, if you like the music, we have discounted CD's of the film soundtrack for sale! At £10 + £1 PnP (or free PnP if you collect them from me in person!) it's a great present, as well as a good soundtrack to summer barbecues. All the profits are going to the RISE Foundation which supports aids orphanages across South Africa. Please email me on oxfambath@yahoo.co.uk if yo uwould like more information.

Food security talk: Local feast or local famine? Putting food security on the map.
Grove St. rooms of the United Reformed Church BA2 6PJ at 7.30 pm.
We have managed to persuade our local expert Mark to give a presentation on Food Security - the topic on everyone's lips. Come and find out what it means.
Can existing UK farmland keep us fed, clothed and housed? A recent study says yes, for the UK as a whole. In this workshop, geographic information expert Mark Thurstain-Goodwin of Geofutures will use powerful data and mapping technology to zoom in to the local scale – and discover that England on its own sees a shortfall leaving 9 million people hungry, with even more marked disparities between smaller regions. The analysis makes clear that there are solutions at hand, but also signposts how climate change and flood risks need to be central to our plans.Download the leaflet.
We are so lucky that Mark has been able to fit this into his busy schedule. This is an opportunity not to be missed.
There will be tea/coffee and cake afterwards and time for discussion.
Looking forward to seeing you there.

This Month's topic: *Sustainable Communities*
The Sustainable Communities Act came into force last October. This Act,
in principle, gives citizens and Local Authorities power to make things
happen - bottom up, not top down. Suggested areas include renewable
enegy projects, energy saving, traffic reduction and encouraging walking
and cycling etc. *But, people need to ensure their local council "opts
in" to the process this autumn.*

THE GRAND PRODUCE SHOW
at NEW ORIEL HALL, LARKHALL
on SUNDAY 31 AUGUST 2008
is an open competition for locally grown fruit, veg, flowers, arts, crafts and culinary skills - children are catered for too.
Anyone who lives or works in B&NES can enter but notification of entries must be forwarded to the registrar, Brigitte Sibbick, by 5.30pm on Saturday 30th August.
Schedule/entry forms available from:
www.banes-allotments/centenary/events
or send me your postal address by email
The show celebrates the skills practised by gardeners growing fruit, vegetable and flowers over the last 100 years. Larkhall allotments were set up in 1908, following implementation of an Act of Parliament which, in essence, is still in place today.
The 1908 Allotments Act enabled families to grow their own food on land provided by the local authority. Admittedly, at the time, this applied to poor people who would otherwise have starved but the principle is still valid: anyone who wants to grow their own food should be able to.
However, the rising waiting lists for allotments in Bath (along with many towns and cities in England) indicate a growing need that has to be satisfied.
Broadlands OrchardShare will have a stand (and some early apples) at the Grand Produce Show - see below...
The Grand Produce Show 2008 looks to the future as well as the past. Current dependence on the supply of food from around the globe needs to be balanced with greater availability of locally grown produce. Most of the land that used to supply Bath in plenty has, long since, been developed. Pockets of land need to be found to provide more growing space. The Allotment Association is working with B&NES Council to increase the number of allotment plots available.
Local community groups involved in community food growing will be participating in the event including Larkhall Saves The Planet ( a 'spoke' of Transition Bath), Bath Organic Community Garden and Broadlands Orchard.
The Show will be open to the public from 2pm. Admission £1 at the door.
The Show is being organised by B&NES Allotments Association as part of a season of events to celebrate the allotments centenary. The season ends with two public lectures at the Guildhall, Bath by Professor Chris Baines and Gardeners World's Carol Klein. Further details will be sent out in September.
Take a walk through the heart of Bristol, with Brenda Page. Look at sculptures and take a stroll with swans, perfect for wildlife lovers. The walk is just under 1 mile and will take approximately 1.5 hrs with stops along the way.
Meeting at Neptune's Statue in Bristol centre (Opposite St Augustine's Parade)

We will be selling apples from our harvest at Bath Farmers Market, Green Park Station, every Saturday in September and through the autumn.
We need volunteers to join our stall rota for any Saturday or Saturdays up to December.
Can you sign up to do a shift from 8.30 to 11, or from 11 to 1.30? Tasks include setting up the stall and packing away at the end; selling apples; chopping apples and working the juice press.
Last Saturday we had a very good response from the Bath Farmers Market shoppers, who rated our apple juice "excellent" and "delicious", and contributed a total of £35 in donations to Broadlands OrchardShare. We sold plenty of apples and gained one new apple tree sponsor.
7 volunteers ran the stall and we had a very busy morning in the lively market atmosphere.
If you have any questions or would like to help out on the stall please contact Tim Baines: timjbaines@yahoo.co.uk (01225 312116)

Wild Foods Foraging Course
The founders of selfsufficientish.com will be offering day courses in foraging in the Bristol area in September and October. The course is meant to highlight the many edible plants growing right under our noses, from widely known foods like the blackberry to others that are more surprising and bizarre. Learn where these plants came from, how they have been used through the years, and how you can use them in your daily life today.
The course sets off from St Werburgh's City Farm Café and runs from 10am-4pm. Expect a long walk and a short local train ride. Weather-proof clothing and walking boots are recommended. Be sure to book in advance.
There is no set cost*, and payment is accepted in cash or cheque.
For more information, or to book your place, please contact one of the self-sufficientish co-founders: andy@selfsufficientish.com or dave@selfsufficientish.com. Full details are also available at the course website. Places are being snapped up quickly, so book early to avoid disappointment!
*Selfsufficientish.com asks only that you pay what you think the forage is worth or what you are able to afford. However, please bear in mind that there are bills to pay, so the course cannot be offered for free. Comparable courses vary in price from approx. £30-100.

Now we are well and truly in the Autumn season (along with the lovely autumnal sunshine) I thought it would be good for us to get together to catch up on our successes over the summer and discuss what we might want to do in Bath over the coming few months to support Oxfam's campaigns. There are a few different options, including a fundraising music night; a media stunt with Don Foster and a film night to name but a few......
So if you'd like to get involved, or just find out a little bit more, please do join us!

BROADLANDS ORCHARDSHARE
Community Orchard
Join us for apple-picking at Broadlands Orchard every Thursday, 2pm to 6pm. All are welcome!
- - -
Also, we need some extra help to collect our windfall apples!
Last week we announced that the Zoo would like to buy our windfalls, and will need 250 kilos of apples every 10 days. This will be a good use for the Broadlands windfall apples, because it will cut down on waste and create some income for the OrchardShare.
We aim to collect 250 kilos of windfalls, as well as enough apples to sell and juice at the next Farmers Market. To achieve this we will need extra helpers to collect the windfall apples, and plenty of large, fairly shallow cardboard boxes.
Can you help?
We provide a campfire cup of tea and biscuits at about 4pm, and volunteers can take a bag of apples for themselves.

Join us Tuesday, 14 October, for this monthly social event involving discussion and practical solutions.
The topic this month is sustainability, and after sharing food (do bring some too if you like) we will be hearing and discussing the council's plans.
The main speaker will be Jane Wildblood who for 20 years worked for Greenpeace and is now B&NES Sustainability Manager. She is the principal person involved in guiding the Council on lowering energy consumption and reducing CO2 emissions.
These aims are very much in line with Transition Bath's overall goal, which is to avoid the perils of climate change while learning to live more sustainably.
There will be time for the audience to question the speaker, and also to put suggestions as to how the Council can help residents play their part in this overall goal.
Widcombe Social Club, Widcombe Hill, 7pm.
