After the success of Saturday's stall, especially around the Knit for Poverty campaign, we're having a bit of a Stitch n Bitch as an opportunity to get together and get creative for the latest Oxfam Campaign!

On Thursday 14th August from 8pm, join us at Green Park Brasserie to have a summer evening drink outside (or inside if the early part of the summer is anything to go by!) and to knit as many squares as we can for the World's Largest Baby Blanket! We'll have plenty of wool and needles, so don't worry about not having 'equipment' and there will be people who can teach you what to do - so even if you can't knit yet, don't let that stop you!

But why knit a blanket? For every mum, the day her child is born should
be the happiest of her life. Yet, in the world's poorest countries,
many mums don't survive to look after their babies.

In the next minute, lack of access to health care will claim the
life of another mum. In a year, half a million mums die because of
poorly equipped hospitals, or because they can't afford to pay health
care fees.

World leaders have promised to end this travesty by providing enough
aid to deliver the medical services needed, but as things stand they're
falling well short.

So, Oxfam are calling on all knitters, and non-knitters who want to give it a go!, to help create a patch for a giant baby blanket – a 'visual petition' we'll hand in to world leaders in September 2008. We're aiming for 250,000 patches - one for every mum who should have survived pregnancy in the last six months.

This will really show world leaders that we are watching & demanding action - so much so we're willing to really put effort into creating the world's biggest baby blanket!

say whether you will be able to bring your own needles & wool, or
whether you'd like some, that would also be great! We're aiming for Bath to have it's own 'mini-blanket' to add to the petition, so why not try and add a square to the count!!

The show celebrates the skills practised by gardeners growing fruit, vegetable and flowers over the last 100 years. Larkhall allotments were set up in 1908, following implementation of an Act of Parliament which, in essence, is still in place today.

The 1908 Allotments Act enabled families to grow their own food on land provided by the local authority. Admittedly, at the time, this applied to poor people who would otherwise have starved but the principle is still valid: anyone who wants to grow their own food should be able to.

However, the rising waiting lists for allotments in Bath (along with many towns and cities in England) indicate a growing need that has to be satisfied.
Broadlands OrchardShare will have a stand (and some early apples) at the Grand Produce Show - see below...

The Grand Produce Show 2008 looks to the future as well as the past. Current dependence on the supply of food from around the globe needs to be balanced with greater availability of locally grown produce. Most of the land that used to supply Bath in plenty has, long since, been developed. Pockets of land need to be found to provide more growing space. The Allotment Association is working with B&NES Council to increase the number of allotment plots available.

Local community groups involved in community food growing will be participating in the event including Larkhall Saves The Planet ( a 'spoke' of Transition Bath), Bath Organic Community Garden and Broadlands Orchard.

The Show will be open to the public from 2pm. Admission £1 at the door.

The Show is being organised by B&NES Allotments Association as part of a season of events to celebrate the allotments centenary. The season ends with two public lectures at the Guildhall, Bath by Professor Chris Baines and Gardeners World's Carol Klein. Further details will be sent out in September.

walk through the heart of Bristol, with Brenda Page. Look at sculptures
and take a stroll with swans, perfect for wildlife lovers. The walk is
just under 1 mile and will take approximately 1.5 hrs with stops along
the way.

We will be apple picking every Thursday afternoon from the beginning of September - volunteer apple harvesters very welcome.

Always popular with visitors, the Heritage Open Days event, from Thursday, 11 September to Sunday, 14 September, includes two buildings run by Bath & North East Somerset Council - No 4 The Circus, and St John's Museum Store, on the corner of Upper Bristol Road and Locksbrook Road.

Anyone who has always wanted a glimpse inside a Georgian house, or wondered exactly what went on when the Victorians went for spa treatment, now has the chance to find out.

Local sites open are Englishcombe Tithe Barn, Saltford Brass Mill, Bath Masonic Hall, Central United Reformed Church, 4 The Circus, St John's Museum Store, St Swithin's Church and Somerset & Dorset Railway Heritage Trust.

Heritage Open Days is a national, annual event co-ordinated by the Civic Trust and English Heritage. It allows free access to those enticing places that the public know exist, but cannot usually get to see.

We will be selling apples from our harvest at Bath Farmers Market, Green Park Station, every Saturday in September and through the autumn.

We need volunteers to join our stall rota for any Saturday or Saturdays up to December.
Can you sign up to do a shift from 8.30 to 11, or from 11 to 1.30? Tasks include setting up the stall and packing away at the end; selling apples; chopping apples and working the juice press.

Last Saturday we had a very good response from the Bath Farmers Market shoppers, who rated our apple juice "excellent" and "delicious", and contributed a total of £35 in donations to Broadlands OrchardShare. We sold plenty of apples and gained one new apple tree sponsor.
7 volunteers ran the stall and we had a very busy morning in the lively market atmosphere.

Eight historic buildings in Bath and North East Somerset will open their doors to the public for free entry, as part of an event coordinated and promoted by the Council.

Always popular with visitors, the Heritage Open Days event, from Thursday, 11 September to Sunday, 14 September, includes two buildings run by Bath & North East Somerset Council - No 4 The Circus, and St John's Museum Store, on the corner of Upper Bristol Road and Locksbrook Road.

Anyone who has always wanted a glimpse inside a Georgian house, or wondered exactly what went on when the Victorians went for spa treatment, now has the chance to find out.

Local sites open are Englishcombe Tithe Barn, Saltford Brass Mill, Bath Masonic Hall, Central United Reformed Church, 4 The Circus, St John's Museum Store, St Swithin's Church and Somerset & Dorset Railway Heritage Trust.

Heritage Open Days is a national, annual event co-ordinated by the Civic Trust and English Heritage. It allows free access to those enticing places that the public know exist, but cannot usually get to see.

The first ever Keynsham Green Fair will be held Saturday, 20th September from 10am-1pm in Victoria Methodist and Keynsham Baptist Church (both on the High Street in Keynsham). This will be your opportunity to come to an event with lots of information about environmental issues, as well as information on how you can make a difference and be part of the solution.

Entry to all Green Fair venues is free. Fairtrade tea and coffee will be on sale at the Baptist Church and Victoria Methodist Church.

The event is part of the More to Life 08 initiative.

There will be a walk of the proposed Two Tunnels Greenway on Saturday, 20 September.

Begin at 10.00 from the beginning of Linear Way, just around the corner from the junction with Bellotts Road and the Lower Bristol Road, 50 metres west of the Royal Oak pub, south of Windsor Bridge - see http://tinyurl.com/5o2nj7. It will not be possible to go through either of the tunnels, so we shall be going over the top of Combe Down.
