Wild Foods Foraging Course

The founders of selfsufficientish.com will be offering day courses in foraging in the Bristol area in September and October. The course is meant to highlight the many edible plants growing right under our noses, from widely known foods like the blackberry to others that are more surprising and bizarre. Learn where these plants came from, how they have been used through the years, and how you can use them in your daily life today.

The course sets off from St Werburgh's City Farm Café and runs from 10am-4pm. Expect a long walk and a short local train ride. Weather-proof clothing and walking boots are recommended. Be sure to book in advance.

There is no set cost*, and payment is accepted in cash or cheque.

For more information, or to book your place, please contact one of the self-sufficientish co-founders: andy@selfsufficientish.com or dave@selfsufficientish.com. Full details are also available at the course website. Places are being snapped up quickly, so book early to avoid disappointment!

*Selfsufficientish.com asks only that you pay what you think the forage is worth or what you are able to afford. However, please bear in mind that there are bills to pay, so the course cannot be offered for free. Comparable courses vary in price from approx. £30-100.

Hi All,

Now we are well and truly in the Autumn season (along with the lovely autumnal sunshine) I thought it would be good for us to get together to catch up on our successes over the summer and discuss what we might want to do in Bath over the coming few months to support Oxfam's campaigns. There are a few different options, including a fundraising music night; a media stunt with Don Foster and a film night to name but a few......

So if you'd like to get involved, or just find out a little bit more, please do join us!

BROADLANDS ORCHARDSHARE

Community Orchard

Join us for apple-picking at Broadlands Orchard every Thursday, 2pm to 6pm. All are welcome!

- - -

Also, we need some extra help to collect our windfall apples!

Last week we announced that the Zoo would like to buy our windfalls, and will need 250 kilos of apples every 10 days. This will be a good use for the Broadlands windfall apples, because it will cut down on waste and create some income for the OrchardShare.

We aim to collect 250 kilos of windfalls, as well as enough apples to sell and juice at the next Farmers Market. To achieve this we will need extra helpers to collect the windfall apples, and plenty of large, fairly shallow cardboard boxes.

Can you help?

We provide a campfire cup of tea and biscuits at about 4pm, and volunteers can take a bag of apples for themselves.

- - -

The next volunteering day is Saturday 11th October, 2pm to 6pm. We will be apple picking and Richard needs a few helpers to do the finishing touches to the Compost Toilet (from 1pm).

We also run a stall at Bath Farmers Market every Saturday, 8am to 1.30pm selling apples and pressing apple juice. Please contact Jan (jfountaine@freenet.co.uk) if you would like to do a shift (8am-11am or 11am-1.30pm) so that she can put you on the rota.

Broadlands OrchardShare Apple Day will be on Sunday 19th October.

Start: 19:00
End: 21:00

Fair trade or free trade? Personal or political? Change the rules or break them? Can we make a difference? Speakers include Bruce Crowther, founding father of the Fairtrade Town movement.

For further information, contact Rachel Ward, B&NES Stronger Communities Manager at 0117 9868683 or St. John's Parish Church at 0117 9863345.

Join us Tuesday, 14 October, for this monthly social event involving discussion and practical solutions.

The topic this month is sustainability, and after sharing food (do bring some too if you like) we will be hearing and discussing the council's plans.

The main speaker will be Jane Wildblood who for 20 years worked for Greenpeace and is now B&NES Sustainability Manager. She is the principal person involved in guiding the Council on lowering energy consumption and reducing CO2 emissions.

These aims are very much in line with Transition Bath's overall goal, which is to avoid the perils of climate change while learning to live more sustainably.

There will be time for the audience to question the speaker, and also to put suggestions as to how the Council can help residents play their part in this overall goal.

'Wild in the Water'

Join the Avon Biodiversity Partnership for a new festival in and around Bristol, aimed at drawing attention to the streams, rivers, coastal strips and estuary that make up such an important part of our landscape.

Activities will include water vole watches, canoe and ferry safaris, pond dipping, coastal rambles, and a Family Fun Day (Sunday, 12 October at Bristol City Council’s Create Centre in Smeaton Road).

Most events are free or subsidised by the more than 45 organisations that make up the Partnership. Support is also coming from Bristol Harbour Railway and the Bristol Ferry Boat Company, which will provide special services and discounted fares on Family Fun Day.

Details of the full Wild Waters programme can be found at www.wildwaters.org.uk or call Avon Biodiversity Partnership representative Matt Hamilton on 0117 917 7270.

The Meaning of Food: A Festival of Film - served with discussion, displays & good food!

Friday 17th - Sunday 19th October

World Food Day is Thursday 16th October and to mark this day the Pierian Centre is hosting a weekend Festival of Film. The Meaning of Food is an extravaganza looking at food from every angle - from the comic austerity of A Private Function to the sensuous abundance of Chocolat. Speakers, discussion, and tasters complete this cultural banquet!

The importance of food runs through the very core of human culture. Food lives in the mouth, in the mind, and in the farmer's hands. It lives in the memory of individuals and communities. It can be a sacrament, or a commercial transaction - a key to ritual, relationship and politics. And Hunger has been our companion since time began. The Meaning of Food explores the myriad ways that film handles food.

Screening prices: daytime £3.50, evening £4.50, children £2. Special low-income rates available on request.

We'll be serving food linked to each film - and a speaker as well to help you digest it. The Programme can be found below, but for details contact us on 0117 924 4512 or info@pieriancentre.com. The Pierian Centre is at 27 Portland Square, St Pauls, Bristol BS2 8SA (www.pieriancentre.com).

In addition to a tasty menu of films, there's a set-piece Discussion at 2pm on Saturday 18th October. 'The Good, The Bad & The Unpalatable' is the title - and it's looking at the ethics behind the food we eat, with expert speakers from Friends of the Earth, Transition Bristol and the World Development Movement. The speakers are excellent and it is so pertinent to our rapidly changing economic and environmental crisis.

It is all part of the Pierian Centre's Meaning of Food weekend. Come, sample and enjoy!
