Life On the Edge: Climate Change in Bangladesh

We're privileged to be hosting the amazing Jamie Hewlett exhibition in Bristol this month, highlighting the impacts of climate change in Bangladesh. Come along on 5th February at 7pm for a special evening event when you will hear more about the real lives behind the striking watercolours. You will hear Zunaed Rabbani, an Oxfam volunteer from Bangladesh who recently visited areas in the far southwest of the country which have been devastated by cyclones. He has stunning stills and video footage from his trip and speaks movingly of his experience.  For more information check out the Facebook event here.

Afternoon Tea with Maryam Bibi
An inspiring and internationally renowned speaker will be visiting Bristol to give a talk on the 13 th of February. Maryam Bibi is the founder of Khwendo Kor, a non-governmental organisation based in Pakistan working to empower vulnerable communities, especially women and children, to demand their rights and contribute to a just and equitable society. These efforts have been recognised internationally; she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005, has received the Human Rights Award from the International Labor Organization and has been recognised by the UN with the Recognition of Services award. Ms Bibi was recently featured in The Times and also appears in this month’s New Internationalist magazine. Come along and have a cuppa at Coexist, Hamilton House and hear Ms Bibi's thoughts on the rights to health and education for women and their children. For more information, check out the Facebook page .

Oxfam Live
Watch out for your invite to the Bristol Oxfam Live event that will be landing in your inbox very soon. This special annual event will take place in Bristol city centre on Saturday 27 th of March from 2-5.30pm and is a brilliant opportunity to ‘get up close and personal’ with Oxfam supporters, directors, trustees and experts from the field.  This year will feature a presentation from an Oxfam programme officer in Pakistan. For more info about the event and to register click here .

Haiti Earthquake Appeal
A massive ‘thank you!’ to everyone who has got involved with the fundraising efforts for Haiti. The results have been overwhelming: in Bath, a collection at the train station by volunteers raised an amazing £1500, at Bristol railway station volunteers raised £780, while students at Bristol University have succeeded so far in collecting £1300 with more fundraising planned. The Bradford-on-Avon group also raised over £600, with the mayor lending a hand at the station! If you’re thinking about organising your own fundraiser, we’ve put together some ideas to get you started . You can find more information about the Haiti appeal here and Disasters Emergency Committee Haiti Appeal posters here . If you’d like any help or support, or need collection tins or buckets, email Fiona: fremnant@oxfam.org.uk .

Copenhagen: Have your say
In the aftermath of the UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen, the Department for International Development (DfID) would like to hear your thoughts about its coverage of the COP15. Your feedback will help improve the way the department covers fundamental issues and events… Take part in the survey here .

Go Global!
Get involved with an exciting new project for young volunteers aged 16-25 run by African Initiatives and funded by the youth volunteering charity V. A team of volunteers supported by African Initiatives will plan and run a Go Global Community Action Day based around a ‘living’ board game, using the community environment as the base for day of interactive learning! The project offers an innovative way for young people to make a positive impact in the community, meet new people and have fun. Volunteers will develop communication, interpersonal, and project management skills and get a foot in the door to the charity sector. At the end of the project volunteers will receive a certificate to recognise their involvement in the project and boost their CV. If you can only take one action this month...
Make the Big Promise! In 2000, world leaders committed to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to tackle global poverty. Ten years on and they are way off track with keeping these promises, things like reducing maternal and child mortality rates and providing primary education for all. We’re asking you all to make your own promise by logging onto the Oxfam website to show world leaders how it should be done! Your promise doesn’t have to be huge, it can be anything, from cutting back your tea intake to lobbying your MP about health and education for all.

Say it. Do it. Share it with your friends. Set an example…
